CFA Joins Consumer Advocates, Industry in Urging Congress to Fund Food Chemical Review

CFA TC

Consumer Federation of America allied with other consumer advocates, environmental and public health activists, and food industry representatives, in asking congressional leaders to give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration adequate resources to evaluate the safety of food chemicals currently on the market. Specifically, the letter requests an increase of $30 million for food chemical reassessment by FDA, to be used towards the agency’s review of the 21 chemicals currently prioritized for reassessment. As the letter explains, strong federal oversight of food ingredients will provide consumers with confidence in the safety of our food system, and industry with the predictability and stability needed to produce safe and affordable foods for American consumers, but FDA cannot take on this role without funding for staff with relevant chemical and toxicological expertise.
